Have you noticed your skin looking a bit thinner, a bit more crepey, since your periods stopped? No, you're not imagining it. And if that glass of wine has become a twice-nightly fixture too, it's worth knowing the two might be combining to launch a joint-attack against your skin.
Menopause changes your collagen levels fast. A 2019 review in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology puts it plainly: up to 30% of the skin's collagen can be lost in the first five years after menopause, declining by around 2% a year after that.1 That's not down to bad luck. It's oestrogen, and what happens when your body stops producing as much of it.
Alcohol doesn't cause this on its own. But it doesn't help either, and for many women going through menopause, it's one of the few factors that's genuinely within their control.
Why Does Menopause Hit Your Collagen So Hard?
Oestrogen does more than regulate your cycle. It's directly involved in producing collagen, the protein that acts as scaffolding, keeping your skin firm and holding its shape. Your skin carries oestrogen receptors right through the dermis. When oestrogen drops, fibroblast activity drops with it: the cells responsible for manufacturing new collagen and elastin.2 Collagen is the scaffolding. Elastin is the spring. Menopause reduces both.
The result? Skin that thins, dries out, and stops bouncing back the way it did. Some patients notice it within the first year of menopause. For others, it creeps in over several years. Either way, it's not something you're doing wrong. It's biology, and will happen whether you drink or not.
How Does Alcohol Make This Worse?
Alcohol dehydrates you, and dehydrated skin looks it: dry, dull, and less able to hold onto your precious collagen. But dehydration is not the only issue.
Drinking regularly triggers inflammation throughout the body, and inflammation works against collagen. It also contributes to a process called glycation, where sugar molecules attach themselves to collagen fibres and make them stiff and brittle rather than springy. Alcohol feeds this twice over: ethanol itself, and acetaldehyde, the reactive compound your body breaks it down into.3 Alcohol also widens blood vessels close to the skin's surface, which over time can leave you with more visible thread veins and a flushed complexion that doesn't fade.
Another little-known problem is the fact that while alcohol might help you drop off, it disrupts the deep sleep your skin relies on to repair itself overnight. Combine that with menopause, which already disrupts sleep for many patients, and your skin loses its two best chances to recover in the same night.

Signs Your Collagen Might Be Under Strain
Whether it's menopause, alcohol, or the two combined, the signs your skin is losing collagen tend to look the same. A few worth watching for:
- Skin that bruises more easily than it used to
- Fine lines settling in faster, especially around the eyes and mouth
- A loss of bounce, where skin feels looser or takes longer to spring back when pinched
- More visible thread veins, particularly across the cheeks and nose
- Dullness that no amount of moisturiser seems to fix
None of these mean something's gone wrong. They're simply your skin telling you it needs a bit more support than it used to. One exception worth naming: if bruising is new, marked, or you can't account for it, mention it to your GP before you book anything with anyone. Thinner skin explains a lot of easy bruising after menopause. It is not the only thing that can.
What Actually Helps?
The good news is that skin is responsive. It reacts to how you treat it, at any age, and menopause is no exception. A few changes make a real difference:
- Rethink the drinking, don't necessarily ban it. You don't have to go teetotal. The UK Chief Medical Officers put the low risk limit at 14 units a week, the same for men and women, spread over three or more days rather than saved up for the weekend.4 Cutting back to within that, with a few alcohol-free days, gives your skin room to recover.
- Hydrate properly. Water won't rebuild collagen, but well-hydrated skin holds its structure better and looks plumper for it.
- Feed your collagen. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis. Plenty of it in your diet helps. Protein matters too, as it provides the amino acids collagen is built from.
- Protect what you've got. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is one of the most effective things you can do to slow collagen breakdown, whatever your age.
- Prioritise sleep. Easier said than done during menopause, we know. But the less alcohol disrupts it, the more repair time your skin gets.
These won't reverse the clock. What they will do is give your skin the best possible foundation. Any treatment you choose to have then works with your body rather than against it.
