Why do we offer chemical peels at The Doctors Laser Clinic?
Table of Contents
As with all treatments we offer at the clinic, we choose wisely. The use of chemical peels we offer are no exception. We look at the reasons why we chose to offer peels and why they are one of the most effective skin treatments on offer today.
The history of chemical peels
Chemical peels have been traced right back to ancient Egypt, where combinations of chemicals that were available at the time were used to aid the complexion. There is also evidence that skin peels were used in both ancient Greek and also Roman times. Fast forward to the 1800’s and Austrian Ferdinand Von Hebra started to develop his version of the modern day skin peels we use today. Go forward further in the history of peels and you will encounter George Miller Mackee. The sheer amount of research George published undoubtedly speeded up the development of the modern day peels we use today.
How do peels work?
The dermis, subcutaneous tissue, and the epidermis are the three layers that make up the skin. The top layer, the epidermis, acts as a barrier against bacteria, UV radiation, pollution, and anything else the environment tries to throw at it. The blood vessels, sweat glands, and hair follicles are all found in the dermis, the intermediate layer. The deepest layer, the subcutaneous tissue, is where the fat cells are located.
The peel process
Chemical peels work by removing skin cells in the epidermis, to reveal the underlying skin layers. This process promotes the growth of new skin cells and stimulates collagen production to improve skin texture and tone. The specific ingredients in the range of peels we offer; Medik8 Peels, include glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid. These acids work to exfoliate, promote cell turnover, and vastly reduce unsightly pigmentation.
The Medik8 range of peels
We offer a wide range of Medik8 peels to suit all skin types and conditions.
The Medik8 range comprises of Universal, Rewind, Even, and Clarity
Universal AHA is a skin peel that is suitable for most patients, regardless of their skin type or skin concerns. This peel visibly brightens, smoothens, decongests, and revitalises the skin. This makes it ideal for first-time users or those who want to maintain the results of previous peels. The active ingredients in this treatment include Glycolic, Lactic, and Mandelic acids at a concentration of 23.1%.
For our patients who might be concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, we would recommend Rewind. This peel promotes collagen production, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The active ingredients in Rewind are Glycolic, Mandelic, and Pyruvic acids at a concentration of 46.2%.
If you have various skin imperfections such as sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and dull, uneven skin, then Even is the right choice for you. Even helps to restore a more uniform and radiant complexion. The active ingredients in Even are Glycolic and Lactic acids at a concentration of 48.9%.
For those suffering with blemishes and congested skin, we would recommend the Medik8 Clarity. This powerful blend of acids sinks deep into pores to clarify and decongest the complexion. It will bring blemishes under control and dramatically reduce the risk of future skin breakouts. The active ingredients in Clarity are Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic, Salicylic, and LHA acids at a concentration of 47.8%.
