What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment that involves injecting a solution called a sclerosing agent into the affected veins. It uses a fine needle for this. This solution causes the vein walls to collapse and stick together, which eventually leads to the damaged vein fading away. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the treated vein, leaving the skin and surrounding area free of unsightly veins.

Varicose veins and spider veins

Varicose veins can be large, swollen, and twisted veins that usually develop in the legs. They can be painful and cause individuals to feel self-conscious about their appearance. Spider veins, on the other hand, are smaller, superficial veins that appear as thin, web-like patterns on the skin. While they may not cause discomfort like varicose veins, they can still be a source of embarrassment for some people. The way they are treated can be similar, but as we have many treatment options here, it may be the case that you will have different treatment methods in one treatment session, for other parts of the body. We will always offer you the best solution whatever the quantity and type of vein. Very small thread veins can also be treated with laser and ipl machines.

Leg vein treatments

There are various treatment options available for leg veins, treatments such as laser therapy, endovenous thermal ablation, and surgery. Sclerotherapy is a popular choice for many patients because it offers minimal recovery time, is less invasive, and can effectively treat both varicose and spider veins.

Microsclerotherapy treatment

Microsclerotherapy is sometimes the term used for sclerotherapy in smaller veins. It is the same treatment, it just treats spider veins, or thread veins. Sclerotherapy as a term is used more for larger, varicose veins, but the terms are sometimes interchangeable.

Injection site and treatment process

During the sclerotherapy procedure, the medical professional will cleanse the injection site before carefully injecting the sclerosing agent into the affected vein with a very fine needle. The agent works by irritating the vein walls, causing them to collapse and to assist shrinkage. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the number of veins in the treated area. The sclerosant solution usually used in these treatments is sodium tetradecyl sulphate.

Recovery time for sclerotherapy

Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can return to their daily normal activities immediately after treatment. Some minor bruising and swelling, as will many medical procedures, may occur in the treated legs affected in areas but should subside within a few days. Depending on your particular case we may suggest wearing compression stockings and will offer advice on getting the best out of the leg vein treatment.

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity and size of the veins being treated. Our patients see significant improvement after just one session, but it may take several sessions for optimal results.

New veins and long-term results

While the sclerotherapy treatment is effective in treating existing veins, it cannot prevent new ones from forming. Some patients may develop new varicose or spider veins over time and may require additional treatment sessions to maintain their desired results. However, sclerotherapy has a high success rate and is considered a reliable long-term solution for treating problematic veins.

Is sclerotherapy effective for facial thread veins?

Although patients get thread, or spider veins on the face, sclerotherapy is just used for leg veins. We have many other treatment types available for facial veins. Please see our thread vein removal page.

The causes of varicose veins

The underlying cause of varicose and thread veins is the weakening of the vein walls and valves, which can also lead to poor blood circulation. Healthy veins have one-way valves that keep blood flowing toward the heart. When these valves become weak or damaged, blood can pool in the affected area causing them to become enlarged and twisted. Factors contributing to the development of varicose veins include genetics, age, obesity, pregnancy, and occupations that require prolonged standing. Hormonal changes, particularly in women during pregnancy, menopause, or while using hormonal birth control, can also increase the risk of developing varicose veins. While not always preventable, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting can help reduce the likelihood of developing varicose veins.

A safe, minimally invasive procedure

Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective treatment option for those looking to eliminate varicose and spider veins without the need for aesthetic plastic surgery or a vascular surgeon. With minimal recovery time and the potential for lasting results, it’s no wonder that many patients choose this treatment to help them regain confidence in their appearance.
