If you are considering Botulinum (often referred to as “Botox”), please read our information about it first or download the leaflet, here.
What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein that has been around for millions of years – along with the bacteria that produce it. Over the past 40 years it has been increasingly purified and is now used extensively and safely in the medical and aesthetic fields. Like many drugs such as Penicillin it is very safe when used appropriately by properly qualified doctors, dentists and nurses.
Why You Should Only Use A Licensed Expert?
You should only be using the services of a licensed doctor, dentist or prescribing nurse in a registered clinic.
It is not only illegal, but potentially unsafe for anyone outside of these groups to prescribe or use botulinum. None of the reputable pharmaceutical companies will supply their purified toxin to any medically unqualified personnel. Doctors who prescribe remotely for sole nurse practitioners risk being struck off. There is considerable concern about the widespread use of dubiously sourced and impure toxin from China and elsewhere. If it is too cheap to be true then it is probably dangerous and you should not be risking your health.
All botulinum toxins are prescription only medicines (POM) and can only be prescribed by doctors, dentists and nurses with a prescribing qualification, following a face to face assessment and consultation.
Botox® is a registered trademark of Allergan. Other licensed brands include Azzalure®, Dysport®, Xeomin® Bocouture® . The Doctors Laser Clinic is very proud to use Bocouture manufactured by Merz Aesthetics in Germany to the very highest of purity standards.
How Does it Work?
Botulinum toxin Type A works by blocking the nerve impulses to muscles which relaxes them for around 8-12 weeks after the injection. The higher the dose the greater the effect. The skill is getting the muscle to relax but not be paralysed ending up with a mask like face. Less is more! We can always top up but can’t take away.
What are the Benefits?
- Looking younger and healthier
- Smooth fresh wrinkle free skin
- Added self-confidence
- Clinical trials have shown it to reduce anxiety and depression
- A great psychological boost
- Long lasting effect 2-4 months
- Quick and easy return straight to work afterwards
Does it Hurt?
Most patients do not mind the small individual pin-pricks. Good technique reduces discomfort. There is sometimes a popping or crunching sensation that is felt.
Who and What do we Treat?
Almost everyone is suitable so long as you aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding. Very few people need Botox® under the age of 25 years.
Bocouture is formally licensed for the treatment of upper face dynamic frown lines and crow’s feet. It does not treat deep static lines although with long term and repeated use these lines often diminish in the same way that hanging a crumpled shirt in an airing cupboard helps.
After appropriate discussion with your practitioner there are of-label treatments such as horizontal brow lines, lip lines, chin dimpling, to lift the mouth corners, improve the jaw line and platysmal bands to smooth the appearance of the neck. We can also treat hyperhidrosis.
An initial consultation with a cooling off period for first timers is very important so that we can make sure we fully understand what can and cannot be achieved using botulinum. It may well be that some problems will need fillers, laser treatments, plastic surgery or a combination of all four!
It is important you tell your practitioner about any medicines or dietary supplements you are taking, some medicines can adversely affect the way the toxin works or increase your risk of bruising.
Supplements such as Vitamin A, C or E, Gingko Biloba, garlic, fish oils, St. John’s Wort and medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen can increase the risk of bruising. You are advised to stop taking them a few days beforehand. Do not drink alcohol the night before your treatment.
Make-up will need to be wiped off prior to treatment. Foundation can be safely applied soon after.
Aftercare and Follow-up
You will be encouraged to keep the injected muscle groups active for a few hours after injection. To get maximum effect we do not want the toxin to be washed away too soon. The advice is: no vigorous exercise, no hot baths, saunas or showers, no massage to the area, no lying on the area and no alcohol for 4-5 hours.
The effect does not usually develop for 2-3 days, sometimes longer. Optimum results are at 2-3 weeks at which point we offer a review appointment for a free top-up if necessary. Our Policy is ‘less is more’!
How Long Will it Last?
On average 3 months – worst 2 months often 4 months. Movement starts to recover from 8 weeks. Repeating treatment when movement almost fully recovers gives optimum results over time.
Should you experience any unexpected side effects or any that concern you, please contact the clinic.
